Find the actual vehicle-return location
Read the return branch and address on your rental confirmation, then obtain its current return instructions. A location marketed for San Juan Airport may use an airport rental facility or a separate branch with onward transport. Neither description alone identifies your airline’s departure entrance. Confirm the vehicle-return entrance, how the handover works and how you reach your terminal afterward. Follow your own rental company’s instructions rather than another brand’s directions.
Two return arrangements, two different plans
For an airport-facility return, confirm the assigned return area and the route from there to your airline. For an off-airport branch, establish where the car is accepted and what onward transport is actually available for your date and time. A shuttle description is not a guaranteed departure interval. These are planning examples, not directions for every rental. A booking labelled SJU does not authorize returning the vehicle at a different airport or branch.
Work backwards from the airline deadline
Start with the airline’s required arrival time at SJU. Add the journey from the rental return to departures, unloading and handover, any refueling required by your contract, and the drive from your accommodation. Then check that the sequence fits the branch’s arrangements. Vehicle return does not complete airline check-in, applicable USDA inspection, security or reaching the gate. No single extra allowance or guaranteed queue time applies to every reservation.
Keep the whole group and its bags in the plan
Count every passenger, suitcase, stroller and mobility aid when checking onward transport. A rental vehicle’s capacity does not establish shuttle capacity or assistance. Ask how your group and equipment will reach the terminal after handover. If considering separate passenger drop-off, confirm a suitable permitted location and a clear reunion plan first; do not leave someone responsible for bags or children without agreement. Check the car for belongings before leaving it.
Confirm early or unattended returns separately
Ask the rental company about the actual return time, branch access, accepted key procedure and onward transport. Permission to leave keys does not by itself confirm an available shuttle or that every contractual step is complete. Use Puerto Rico local dates, especially around midnight. If instructions are unclear, resolve them before departure instead of improvising at a closed branch. A private airport-transfer confirmation does not amend your rental agreement or establish a pickup at the rental office.
Returning the car before the final hotel night
Returning earlier may separate the rental handover from flight day, but confirm the change with the rental company first. Arrange the journey from the return location to your accommodation and the later hotel-to-SJU journey independently. Give any transport provider the actual pickup address; a rental office is not an airport terminal or hotel lobby. Obtain availability, vehicle, meeting point and full fare in writing. Do not assume a rental shuttle serves your hotel.
Questions before departure
Does leaving the keys mean I am ready to fly? No: follow the rental return procedure and then reach the airline and complete airport requirements. Can I rely on another company’s return directions? No: use your own reservation. Does a private transfer handle the rental contract? No. What if the flight changes? Contact both the airline and rental company, and any separately booked transport provider. Confirm each changed arrangement; one message does not update every booking.
